Introduction to the Department
To meet the need for knowledgeable and competent legal professionals who serve in international settings and multicultural communities, Namseoul University has developed the Masters in International Legal Studies (MILS), open to both Korean students and international students who are interested in pursuing careers in law, law enforcement, and related fields, or early to mid-career professionals already working in these fields, yet desire to further their education in legal studies.
Educational Goals
Legal studies courses will cover criminal justice, civil law, business law and comparative law to give graduates a broad range of knowledge and skills to solve issues with an international legal mindset. Through this program, students will meet the need for knowledgeable and competent legal professionals who serve in international settings and multicultural communities in the public or business sector.

- Attorney (requires a J.D. and successful passing of the bar exam)

- Internship program that connects the class courses with local public and private organizations to gain real world experience, improve research skills and promote advocacy.
- A person with an average GPA of 3.0 or higher shall be paid Performance scholarship, 25% of the tuition.

Comparative Justice Systems
This course offers a comparative study of the U.S. criminal justice system and criminal justice systems around the world. The course will cover historical and cultural legal traditions, policing, corrections, and juvenile justice, emphasizing how culture, tradition, and geography shapes legal systems.

Law, Justice, and human Rights
This course examines human rights and its inter-connectivity with law and justice. Students will discuss current issues and events in the area of human rights and explore the laws that shape domestic and foreign policy pertaining to human rights.

Multiculturalism and the Legal System
This course examines multicultural issues from a historical and contemporary perspective, and how race and ethnicity impact law and justice policies. Students will explore racial and ethnic discrimination in law and ways to end discrimination.

Ethical Practices for Legal Practitioners
This course explores ethics in legal policy and public administration. Students will engage in a variety of ethical decision-making exercises and examine and discuss real-life ethical decisions made by policymakers, legal professionals, police officers, and government officials.

Communication Skills for Legal Practitioners
This course will provide students with the opportunity to develop the interpersonal communication skills, presentation skills and professional writing techniques necessary for success in a career in the legal field.

Leadership in Law and Public Administration
This course will explore leadership and the decision-making process in the field of law and public administration. Students will learn effective leadership principles, management strategies, and technological tools, to become effective, innovative and inspirational leaders.

Legal Writing and Research
This course will offer an introduction to legal writing, research, and analysis. In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of briefing a case and utilizing legal research tools, while gaining an understanding of the analytical thought process that lawyers and other legal professionals use.

Contemporary Legal Issues
This course examines the current issues and trends influencing the roles, responsibilities, and management challenges in the legal field, both in private practice and the public sector. Each student will be given a platform to discuss current legal issues and how to solve them.

Negotiation and Dispute Resolution
This course provides an overview of dispute resolution and negotiation from the perspective of professional legal practitioners. Students to gain an in-depth understanding of the tools, skills, and temperament necessary to become an advocate or negotiator.

Emergency Management and Operations
This course focuses on training students to be effective managers and communicators when faced with crisis situations and all-hazards emergency planning and response. Students will examine various roles in the context of emergency management

Cyber and Information Crimes
This course will examine the investigation and prosecution of cybercrimes and information crimes. Discussion topics include hacking, identity theft, cyber stalking and cyberbullying, electronic surveillance, and national security concerns.

Research Foundations
This course will offer an introduction to research design and methodology. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding in research by focusing on theory to conceptualizing a problem and formulating the design methods, research questions, answers as well as design approach.
